Since 2021, Duurzame Growers has been a micro farm run by young agrarians, whose focus is to grow great food for their community.

What makes us Duurzame Growers?

Our Dream.

We have deep roots in our local community.  Our dream is to live a simple, peaceable life where we are able to impact our neighbours in a positive way. What better way is there to reach our community than by growing great food that reduces our carbon footprint by shortening the food supply chain.

Our Journey.

We never stop learning.  As young growers each year is a stepping stone. We launched our market garden business in 2021, and we are taking small steps as our business grows.  We will be offering more selection each year until our goals are reached. These are the β€œbaby” years of Duurzame, so join us as we grow.

Our Goals.

We are keeping it natural, diverse, and sustainable.  In a changing world, the future is ours, so why wouldn’t we participate in positive change while we have that choice. We want to grow our business on a farm that exercises moderation. By implementing minimum tillage, applying wise soil/water management, and with careful crop planning, we are able to lessen the harmful impacts farming has on the environment around us.

Our Name.

What’s Duurzame all about?   We value being part of the worldwide small-scale growing community, and we glean inspiration from our ancestral family heritage.  Duurzame (ˈdyːr.zaːm) is actually the Dutch word for β€œsustainability”. The Netherlands is known for being sustainable. With growing practices that aren’t depleting and damaging the small country’s limited resources, the nation has been able to improve their resources while producing efficient, significant, and quality harvests.  At Duurzame Growers, we want to run a sustainable company, producing delicious and nutritious produce for you, and your family to enjoy!

Our Style.

Farming on a micro-scale prohibits us from using heaving machinery. Our growing area square footage is focused, but that means that we have to give our fields a lot of attention, nurturing our diverse crop daily. This attention gives our gardens higher yields per square foot that most macro-scale/one-crop farms will see over much larger square footage. We do this all while growing a variety of crops!

Our Product.

While we are not β€œcertified organic”, we believe in growing our food the way good food is intended to be grown - a way that doesn’t involve chemical fertilizers, pest sprays, or artificial produce ripeners. Our farm is located in the heart of Centre Wellington.  The fields, at our present farm, haven’t had non-organic fertilizers or herbicides/pesticides applied for the past 15 years.   It is common knowledge, the key to creating great produce starts with healthy soil. At Duurzame, we build our soil by naturally feeding it the necessary microorganisms and by naturally replenishing the soil’s nutrition.   In return, we receive healthier plants that resist disease and pests while producing a crop β€œexploding” with flavour and nutrition.
